Leersoises anchors

The anchor of masonry is a metal detail in the form of T, of S or of X, fixed at the end of a bootstrap and intended to prevent a wall from splitting or to oppose to the push of a vault.

Anchors were very rarely employed on the constructions previous to the XVth century but on the civil constructions after the XVth century, we often see visible anchors. These anchors affect then more or less rich forms, presenting anchored crosses, Saint André's crosses and sometimes, in particular houses, letters or figures indicating the year of the construction.

Today in Leers, anchors are always visible, on the walls of farms, particular houses as well as on the walls of Saint Vaast's church.
